About Sombo Tuy

I was born in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, in 1979.

Growing up, my family was neither rich nor poor. My parents worked hard to provide for our family and education. My father was a photographer, a skill he learned before the Khmer Rouge era. Together with my mother, they operated a photography business before 1975 and rebuilt their livelihood again after 1981.

As a child, I watched my mother work tirelessly to support our family. She took on many different kinds of work so that her children could have opportunities she never had. Looking back, I can see that much of my work ethic, perseverance, and determination came from watching her sacrifices.

My educational journey was not carefully planned. I performed well in school at times, but football became a major influence in my life and distracted me from academics. Rather than pursuing a traditional academic path, I found myself drawn toward technical education. Don Bosco Technical School became an unexpected turning point in my life. What seemed accidental at the time would later become the foundation of my career.

My professional journey began as a Technical Instructor before moving into leadership and management roles. Early in my career, I worked with Development Technology Workshop (DTW), where I gained experience in technical training, production management, quality systems, staff development, and organizational leadership. Managing teams, including people with disabilities, taught me valuable lessons about leadership, responsibility, and the potential within every individual.

In 2005, I joined Land Rover Cambodia. During the following years, I served as Branch Manager and later Technical Director and Aftersales Manager, overseeing multiple branches across Cambodia. These years shaped my understanding of automotive service, leadership, customer relations, training, and business development.

One of the most difficult periods of my life occurred during this time. In 2005, my father became seriously ill while I was working in Battambang, more than 300 kilometers away from Phnom Penh. I had limited financial resources and could not be with him regularly. My brother carried much of the responsibility of caring for him. When my father passed away in 2006, I traveled back to Phnom Penh by bus but arrived too late to be with him in his final moments. That experience left a deep impact on me and reminded me how precious time, family, and relationships truly are.

In 2013, I started my own automotive business. Over the years, I built teams, trained technicians, and established a reputation for quality work in Land Rover and European vehicle repair. Beyond business, I became increasingly passionate about developing people. Having experienced the importance of opportunity in my own life, I wanted to help others gain the skills, confidence, and experience needed to build better futures.

This passion eventually led me into technical and vocational education, workforce development, and industry partnerships. Through training programs, technical mentoring, TVET initiatives, Skills Development Fund projects, and collaborations with Don Bosco and industry partners, I have had the opportunity to contribute to the development of dozens of technicians and professionals.

Today, I am actively developing the One Person One Skill initiative. The vision is simple: every person should have at least one practical skill that allows them to contribute, provide for themselves, and create value for society. Beginning with automotive training, the initiative combines classroom learning, character development, and real workplace experience through partnerships with businesses and workshops.

In 2025, I co-founded Garage Tech Talks, an educational platform dedicated to helping vehicle owners, technicians, and workshop professionals understand automotive technology through practical experience and real-world knowledge.

A major turning point in my life came on September 27, 2023. During a difficult season in my marriage, I found myself searching for answers and feeling unable to solve the challenges before me. In a moment of desperation, I cried out for help. Around that same time, one of my former teachers from Singapore visited Cambodia. He came with a simple purpose: to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with me. That conversation changed the direction of my life. I accepted Christ and began a new journey of faith. Since then, my relationship with God has become the foundation of my purpose, leadership, and understanding of life.

Today, my mission is to help people grow in skill, leadership, purpose, and character through automotive expertise, business experience, education, and Kingdom principles.

When people look back on my life, I hope they will not remember me simply as a businessman, trainer, or automotive expert. I hope they will see someone who used his experience, resources, and opportunities to help others discover their purpose, develop their abilities, and take action rather than waiting for the perfect moment.

I believe every person has a purpose. I believe skills create opportunities. I believe character sustains success. And I believe our lives become most meaningful when what we have learned is used to serve others.
